Preferred Material for Medical Blister Packaging - Sterilization Methods Applicable to PETG, Guarding the Aseptic Barrier of Medical Devices

PETG, short for polyethylene terephthalate - 1,4 - cyclohexanedimethanol ester, is an amorphous copolyester. By introducing CHDM (1,4 - cyclohexanedimethanol) into common PET for copolymer modification, it significantly reduces the material's melting point and broadens the heat-sealing window, making it more suitable for the packaging requirements of precision medical devices.
Full Compatibility with Sterilization Methods: The "Versatile" Feature of PETG
For medical device manufacturers, whether a packaging material can be adapted to different sterilization processes is a key indicator for material selection. PETG material shows strong compatibility in this regard, and the recommended sterilization temperature is generally within 50 degrees Celsius.
Ethylene Oxide Sterilization: The Most Mainstream Partner
Ethylene oxide sterilization is currently the most widely used low-temperature sterilization method in the medical device field. PETG material has excellent chemical corrosion resistance. During the EO sterilization process, it does not react with ethylene oxide gas and does not absorb excessive residues.
In practical applications, PETG blister boxes are usually used in combination with breathable cover materials such as Tyvek or medical dialysis paper. This can not only ensure the penetration of sterilization factors but also maintain the microbial barrier. After EO sterilization, PETG is not prone to embrittlement or yellowing and can maintain good structural integrity.
Irradiation Sterilization: The Balance between Tolerance and Transparency
Gamma-ray and electron-beam sterilization are commonly used for high-value disposable consumables. PETG material has excellent radiation resistance. Under the standard irradiation dose (usually ≤50kGy), the yellowing index change of the material is minimal (Δb*≤2), and no harmful degradation products are generated. In contrast, ordinary PVC materials are extremely prone to degradation in an irradiation environment, while PET may experience embrittlement.
Low-Temperature Plasma Sterilization: Adapt to Modern Sterilization Processes
With the popularization of low-temperature hydrogen peroxide plasma sterilization technology in hospitals, new challenges have been posed to the adaptability of packaging materials. PETG blister boxes perform stably during the low-temperature plasma sterilization process and can meet the sterilization requirements of precision instruments such as minimally invasive surgical instruments and cameras.
Complete Packaging Solution for PETG Blister Boxes
In practical applications, a complete PETG medical sterile packaging system usually consists of two parts: a PETG blister box and a cover material (usually Tyvek® or medical dialysis paper).
The Golden Pair: PETG + Tyvek
For Class III high-risk devices such as orthopedic implants and cardiovascular stents, the combination of a PETG blister box and a Tyvek cover material is the industry gold standard.
  • Bacterial Barrier: The unique fiber structure of Tyvek can effectively block microorganisms (pore size ≤35μm), and the PETG material itself is dense and non-porous, jointly constructing a reliable microbial barrier.

  • Peel Strength: Through an optimized heat-sealing process, a stable peel strength (usually required to be ≥2.4N/15mm) can be formed between PETG and Tyvek, ensuring that the seal will not be accidentally opened during sterilization, transportation, and before use.

  • Aseptic Opening: Good heat-sealing control can achieve "clean peeling", that is, when opening the package, no particles or fiber shedding will occur to contaminate the internal instruments.

Case: Double-Layer Protection for Hip Implants
Take high-value orthopedic implants as an example. Hip joint products usually have a metal surface and are relatively heavy. For such products, a professional packaging solution will adopt a double-layer PETG blister box design:
  • The inside is buffered and protected by a medical-grade sterilization bag, and the outside is heat-sealed with a PETG hard blister box and a Tyvek cover material.

  • This design not only passes strict drop tests to prevent the instrument from sliding or breaking through the aseptic barrier during transportation but also can be adapted to various sterilization methods such as EO, irradiation, and low-temperature plasma, meeting the shelf-life requirements of 5 years or even longer.

Quality Control and Regulatory Compliance
The production and application of PETG medical blister boxes must strictly follow international and domestic standards:
  • ISO 11607: The international standard for the packaging of terminally sterilized medical devices, which clearly defines requirements for materials, aseptic barrier systems, molding, and sealing processes.

  • ISO 13485: The quality management system for medical devices requires manufacturers to complete molding and assembly in a class 10,000 or class 100,000 clean room.

  • YY/T 0681: A series of Chinese standards for the testing methods of packaging of sterile medical devices, used to verify seal strength and sealing integrity.

With exceptional compatibility across EO, irradiation, and low-temperature plasma sterilization, combined with outstanding aseptic barrier properties and regulatory compliance, PETG has become the preferred high-performance material for medical blister packaging. The synergy between PETG thermoformed trays and functional cover stocks ensures that sterile barriers remain intact throughout the product lifecycle—from sterilization to patient bedside.
